Reading Notes - January 2025
January was a long, cold, sad, and depressing month for me. Fortunately, I was able to escape reality with a few good reads, below are my reviews.
Parable of the Talents - Octavia E. Butler [4/5] If you are a fan of dystopian fiction this is a must read book. It was my first exposure to Butler and I'm now a fan. It seems butler could almost see the future. Extremely timely and an accessible read.
Parable of the Sower - Octavia E. Butler [3/5] As a 'completionist' I had no choice but to read this follow-up. While it does close up some threads from the first book it was nowhere near as captivating for me. I may reread this series in the future to reconsider my thinking on this one.
Nuclear War - Annie Jacobsen [4/5] Nightmare inducing material. This book is written in an urgent fashion that makes it difficult to put down. I read this in one sitting and have mixed feelings about recommending it to others, it gave me a lot of anxiety.
People Collide - Isle McElroy [4/5] Given one of my goals is to read more diverse voices and gender roles fascinate me this was a must read. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it and as a bonus it is set in Europe. The Atmospherians is now on my TBR.
Highlights (since last post):
- My partner complimenting how soft my legs are (thank you new after shower oil).
- Getting back into the kitchen and prepping healthier snacks.
- Still no alcohol and feeling better daily.
Needs improvement:
- The amount of time I'm wasting on social media makes me uncomfortable. I need to explore setting limits on my phone and other techniques to improve here.
- Lack of routines (e.g. morning, bed time) leading to forgotten / missed steps.
